Ghery/Moneo
Updated: Feb 13, 2023
Frank Ghery and Rafael Moneo are vital architects in modern architecture. With their thoughtful use of materials and their understanding of the place where they design, they create designs with powerful messages. In addition to this, these two architects stood out as teachers making education a complete and productive experience.
Ghery and Moneo could not be more opposite when it comes to designing. Gehry is daring, without limits and what he captures on paper is brought to reality. With his play on curves and extravagant shapes, he has earned his place as one of the best architects, and as one of the greatest inspirations for those who want to leave behind the four cement walls. While Moneo is more traditional and linear, he finds a way to make an impact with his designs by taking them beyond the square while still being in it.
Just as they are prominent in the architectural field, they are also prominent in education. Rafael taught contemporary architecture courses in Rome, Spain and currently, Harvard. He is recognized, like Frank, for his passion for architecture and his commitment to students. Ghery for his part, to this day teaches online classes (Master class) keeping his legacy alive and leaving parts of it in the many students who have passed through his classroom.
The beauty of being good and specialized in something is sharing knowledge. We see this well in these two architects who serve as a perfect example. Two master minds in contemporary architecture who seek to keep it alive through teaching, and thus share the satisfaction of "getting out of the box."
